Imagine being able to cut your calories while still having the strength to power through a marathon. That's exactly what our MIVEC engine was built to do. The Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control System (MIVEC) engine has the ability to be both a standard car engine and a high-performance machine, delivering a fuel-efficient engine that doesn't skimp on power.

| Many engines today feature some form of variable valve control system, which optimizes power and torque through the opening and closing of engine valves. For the MIVEC system used on the Galant and Eclipse, there are two modes to control the distinct “breathing” needs of the engine.
In the low-speed mode, the MIVEC engine controls when the intake valves open and how far they open to ensure stable combustion that results in no compromise in fuel economy, emission or torque.
In the high-speed mode, the valves are opened longer and farther to provide more air and fuel into the engine. This rewards the driver with more power.
The shifting between modes is controlled continuously by the engine computer based on information received from engine sensors. This allows for a seamless transition between modes for smooth engine performance under all conditions.

In addition to allowing optimum output from your engine at any speed, our MIVEC engine does one more amazing thing: It helps reduce fuel consumption. So when it comes time for that marathon, your Mitsubishi acts just like a well-trained athlete. It delivers plenty of power, but is able to do so without guzzling fuel. Not only will this save you money at the pump, but it alsogives your car an environmentally friendly boost.
