Safety
2009 Lancer
It's obvious that Lancer is sporty. It's easy to see that Lancer is loaded with features. Less obvious are the great lengths that we've gone to with regard to safety*. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety knows; they awarded Lancer the highest rating for front- and rear-impact safety. Take a look and you'll see how we've gone the extra mile to keep you safe.
Seven Airbag System
The Lancer offers standard advanced dual-stage front SRS airbags† driver and passenger side-impact airbags† and front and rear side curtain airbags† on all Lancer models. Sensors evaluate the deceleration during an impact, the position of the driver's seat, and the weight on the front passenger's seat to provide the appropriate level of front airbag† deployment. A first-in-segment feature, Lancer's standard driver's side knee airbag† helps to prevent injury by stabilizing the legs and lower body of the driver in certain frontal collisions.
Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
The ABS technology used by the Lancer helps to eliminate wheel lock-up during panic or emergency braking. Wheel speed is monitored and braking pressure is optimized when impending wheel lock-up is sensed. The system “pulses” the brakes up to 10 times per second, modulating wheel rotation to help eliminate lock-up and maximize driver control.
Refined Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) chassis
Lancer's Refined Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body chassis is designed to help provide added protection in a collision. With the extensive use of high-tensile-strength steel, the frame packs extra reinforcement in the areas where it matters most. By reinforcing critical areas, the RISE body chassis is your friend should you find yourself in a collision. This reinforcement is complemented by energy-absorbing crumple zones that help dissipate energy in an impact. We even gave Lancer crumple zones to help protect pedestrians if the unthinkable should happen.
LATCH System
Lower anchors and tethers for children (LATCH) help simplify the attachment of child safety seats; making it easier for you to help keep your child safe.
ASC (Active Stability Control)
ASC* (Active Stability Control) is a system that is designed to help maintain and control the lateral movement of the Lancer during difficult driving conditions. It uses sensors that check your speed, and how the Lancer is responding to your steering input. Bottom line? ASC simplifies steering for the driver by applying braking pressure to the wheel that is slipping and, if necessary, will cut down the engine throttle to help you maintain control.

Seatbelts and Pretensioners
Every Mitsubishi is equipped with a three-point seatbelt and head restraints, plus front seatbelt pretensioners that are designed to help tighten the belts in certain frontal impacts so the seatbelts can better do their job. Seatbelt force limiters that help the front seatbelts and airbags† work together optimally, are also standard on every Lancer.
*Safety is a two-way street. It requires your attention and cooperation. Please remember to fasten your safety belt, sit well back in your seat and remain upright, properly adjust your head restraint, drive responsibly and obey all traffic laws.

†Airbags are part of a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). To decrease the risk of injury from a deploying airbag, always wear your seatbelt, sit upright in the middle of the seat and do not lean against the door. Always place children 12 and under in the rear seat and use appropriate child restraints. Never place a rear-facing infant restraint in the front seat. See your Owner's Manual and instructions provided with your child restraint for additional information.
